Divisions

Divisions is based on a 19th century ordnance survey map of a small farmyard on the Beara Peninsula in west Cork, where the artist’s father grew up. She is fascinated by the patterns of the manmade boundaries and divisions that were established to determine ownership of land. Within these divisions were more divisions, identifying certain areas of farmland that served specific purposes. Every field and every corner of the field had its own name or description. Challenges in the agricultural industry today makes it virtually impossible for small farmers to survive, meaning it is unlikely that this particular vernacular will survive also. Divisions is a record and document of some of that lingo.
